Wisconsin knows its way around a good meal, and that includes the drive-thru. According to a recent study on fast-food spending relative to income, Wisconsin lands right in the middle of the pack — 27th out of 50 states. Not the thriftiest, not the most indulgent, but steady consumers of fast food cuisine.

But here's something worth chewing on: not all fast food is created equal. While plenty of chains lean on frozen and pre-prepped ingredients, a handful are still doing the old-school work — hand-cutting, hand-breading, and cooking to order.

And six of those made-from-scratch standouts have a serious presence in Wisconsin. A list of chains that skip the freezer pointed the way. Here's who made the cut, what they actually make fresh, and how many you'll find across the state.

Six Fast-Food Chains That Make Their Food From Scratch In Wisconsin

Culver's

We have to start here, because this one is pure Wisconsin. Culver's cooks its burgers only after you order using fresh, never-frozen beef, and churns its frozen custard in small batches throughout the day. In the company's own words, it's not the easiest way to do it, but they believe it's the right way.

The pride runs deep for good reason: the very first Culver's opened in Sauk City in 1984, and today Wisconsin has 157 of them — more than any other state in the country, making up roughly 14% of every Culver's in America. This is home.

Five Guys

Step inside in the morning, and it's all prep work: employees hand-cutting potatoes for fries, slicing produce, and portioning fresh, never-frozen beef that's only cooked once you order. There are no freezers, microwaves, or heat lamps anywhere in the building.

You'll find Five Guys in 17 Wisconsin cities, spread from Milwaukee and Madison to Green Bay, Eau Claire, Wausau, and Appleton. See the full Wisconsin list here.

Panera Bread

Hours before the lunch crowd shows up, Panera's bakers are already turning out fresh bread, bagels, and pastries — every single day. And since that bread is baked fresh daily, most of the unsold loaves are donated through the company's Day-End Dough-Nation program rather than tossed.

Wisconsin is home to 42 Panera locations across 32 cities, reaching from Milwaukee, Madison, and Green Bay to Eau Claire, La Crosse (Onalaska), and just about everywhere in between.

Chipotle

Ever notice the crews always seem to be holding a knife? That's because the onions, peppers, and produce are chopped by hand before the doors even open; the guacamole is mashed from whole avocados; and the chicken, steak, and rice are cooked fresh and replenished throughout the day.

There are 35 Chipotle locations across Wisconsin, with Madison leading the way (campus, East Towne, West Towne, and Shorewood Hills) and more in Milwaukee, Appleton, Brookfield, Green Bay, Eau Claire, Kenosha, Wausau, and River Falls.

Chick-fil-A

That famous chicken sandwich doesn't begin as a frozen patty. Employees hand-bread the chicken throughout the day right in the restaurant, and salads, fruit, and many breakfast items are made fresh daily. Surplus food gets packaged for local shelters through the chain's Shared Table program.

Wisconsin has more than a dozen Chick-fil-A locations and counting, including spots in Madison, Brookfield, the Milwaukee area (Glendale and Greendale), Appleton, Green Bay, Eau Claire, Oshkosh, Onalaska, and the Kenosha area. The official Wisconsin locator has the latest.

Shake Shack

The newcomer with the cult following. Shake Shack smashes its burgers to order, preps produce fresh daily, and churns frozen custard in small batches throughout the day rather than serving it from premade tubs.

Wisconsin has three Shake Shacks so far: Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward, Madison's Hilldale Center, and Brookfield — the last of which features the state's first Shake Shack drive-thru. Track them on the Shake Shack locator.

So go ahead and pull into the drive-thru without the guilt. Whether it's a hometown Culver's ButterBurger or a fresh-baked Panera bagel, plenty of Wisconsin's fast food is made with more care than you might have guessed. Turns out "fast" and "from scratch" aren't always a contradiction.
