For nearly 60 years, rural Wisconsin has been home to one of the most controversial dog breeding operations in the United States. This week, the story took a turn that animal lovers across the country have been waiting a long time to see.

Reports indicate that Big Dog Ranch Rescue and the Center for a Humane Economy have reached an agreement with Ridglan Farms in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin, to purchase roughly 1,500 of the facility's approximately 2,000 beagles.

The deal was reportedly made for an undisclosed price under a confidential agreement. The dogs are expected to receive medical care, microchips, and vaccinations before being placed with rescue partners and adopted out to families across Wisconsin and the rest of the country.

What Is Controversial About Ridglan Farms?

Ridglan Farms has operated as a USDA-licensed beagle breeding facility in the Town of Blue Mounds — about 25 miles southwest of Madison — supplying dogs to biomedical research labs across the country. According to reports, the facility housed roughly 2,000 beagles at the time of this week's announcement.

The farm has been under fire for years. Former employees testified that dogs were subjected to painful eye procedures performed by non-veterinarians without anesthesia.

A Dane County judge appointed a special prosecutor to investigate. In 2025, Ridglan agreed to a settlement requiring the surrender of its state commercial dog-breeding license by July 1, 2026, to avoid criminal prosecution for felony animal-mistreatment charges. It's worth noting that Ridglan has maintained it did not mistreat its animals.

A Rescue Ten Years In The Making

Lauree Simmons, president and founder of Big Dog Ranch Rescue, told reporters the deal came in under $1 million. She also made clear that her organization was not involved in the recent wave of protests at the facility, but credited activists with amplifying the story. Simmons added that discussions with Ridglan predated the break-in attempts entirely.

Those protests made national headlines. On April 18, roughly 1,000 activists converged on Ridglan Farms in an attempt to forcibly remove the beagles. Law enforcement from 17 agencies responded with tear gas, pepper spray, and rubber bullets.

Twenty-nine people were arrested, with five facing felony burglary charges. The raid ultimately failed, and no dogs were removed that day. The legal route, it turns out, worked.

What Happens Now?

The rescued beagles will be transported by Big Dog Ranch Rescue for full medical evaluations before being matched with rescue partners and placed for adoption nationwide. For many of them, it will be the first time they have ever seen sunlight or felt grass under their paws.

Sadly, questions remain about the roughly 500 dogs not included in the current agreement. It is unclear what their fate will be ahead of Ridglan's July 1 license surrender deadline.

Big Dog Ranch Rescue has posted about the rescue on their Facebook page, and they're now dedicated to giving these Beagles second chances by finding them warm, loving homes. As a former Beagle owner until our beloved Zoey passed away, this makes me extremely happy.
