
Update: Body of Canoeist Recovered From Lake in the BWCA Identified
Update: He's been identified as 62-Year-Old Robert Sydney James of St. Louis Park, MN
Ely, MN (KROC-AM News) - Authorities in northern Minnesota are investigating the death of a canoeist in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says employees of the US Forest Service called 911 around 2:20 Saturday afternoon and reported locating a capsized canoe on Iron Lake within the BWCA along the US-Canada border about 20 miles north of Ely. The Force Service employees then investigated further and found a deceased person and their gear floating near the canoe.
A news release on the incident indicates the canoeist was wearing a life jacket. The Sheriff's Office also indicated that investigators believe the deceased individual was on a solo canoe trip into the BWCA.

The identity of the victim has not been released. The incident is being investigated by the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office and the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office.
