In less than a month, recreational marijuana will be legal in Minnesota. However, even though it's legal you won't see any available for retail right away.

In fact, some are saying that to get the program up and running with licenses, regulations, and other factors it could be until 2025 before you can buy it from a dispensary. Sure, you can start to grow it right away under the new law at home, but many people don't know how to grow it, and frankly don't want to.

Beginning August 1, Minnesota residents can have eight marijuana plants growing at home, with only four of them flowering.

Once retail is up and running at dispensaries, Minnesotans 21 or older can buy up to 2 ounces of cannabis flower, 3 grams of concentrate, or 800 milligrams of edibles. That's also what you are allowed to have in possession when you're in public. Which, if you're unaware, is a lot of cannabis.

Still, many people will be looking for recreational marijuana they can buy before it's available in Minnesota. Likely, many people will look to nearby states to purchase. Michigan's upper peninsula has quite a few dispensaries within half a day's drive.

Since you are from a legal state, is it legal to have it?

Federal law still considers cannabis an illegal substance. Crossing state lines with marijuana is still federally illegal. Not to mention, crossing Wisconsin with any amount of marijuana is illegal, since the state doesn't even have medical marijuana legalized.

Still, many people take the risk.

It's estimated that millions and millions of dollars have been sold to out-of-state buyers in Michigan and Illinois. Dispensaries near the border in these states see a lot of buyers from states away. And yes, they will sell it to you with an out-of-state license.
