Minnesota is chock full of weird names. In fact, we have a pretty good amount of totally crazy names. Many of the hard-to-pronounce names come courtesy of our native American community.

Think Minnetonka, Minneopa, Mendota, Winona, Shakopee, Anoka, Bemidji, Chanhassen, Chaska, Eyota, Kabetogama, Mahtomedi, Nisswa, Owatonna, Waconia, Wayzata. and more.

And don't even us started on the names of Minnesota's nearly 12,000 lakes. A plentiful list of more native American inspiration.

So let's get past all of the native American names. They're not weird, just different and honored because they're foreign to us and historical to honor the community.

So what is the weirdest name in the entire state of Minnesota? Weird is in the eyes of the beholder. Some serious contenders include:

  • Ball Club
  • Beaver
  • Blue Earth
  • Clam Falls
  • Clappers
  • Climax
  • Embarrass
  • Fertile
  • Good Thunder
  • Kiester
  • Luck
  • Motley
  • Mound
  • Nimrod
  • Staples
  • Twig

Minnesota also has a bunch of good nicknames as a state itself. We've been the Land of 10,000 Lakes, the North Star State, the Gopher State, the Bold North -- I'm sure I'm missing a few.

So having said all of that, and we know we're missing all kinds or crazy city, town, and state of Minnesota nicknames -- there's one that has been chosen to live at the top of the list.

For 2024, the experts have declared that 'Little Canada' is the weirdest city or town name in Minnesota for the year. As town names don't change very much, it feels like Little Canada might be on a good run for a while.
