Saturday is the official first day of winter, but we got our first taste of the season today with snow falling across the southern part of the state.

Not that we don't usually get snow during the autumn months. In fact, before today we were around ten inches below normal snowfall for the season.

Minnesota ski areas have been busy making their own snow ever since temperatures dropped low enough for them to do so -- but there's nothing quite like some of the natural stuff courtesy of Mother Nature.

As of 4:30 Thursday afternoon the snow is still falling in many areas, with Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories in place until 3:00 am Friday morning for much of the southern portion of Minnesota.

The snow is expected to taper off overnight, but then cold air settles in for a couple of days, with highs only in the teens for Friday and Saturday.

If you're looking for a bit of a warmup, there's good news on the horizon. High temperatures across southern Minnesota look to be headed into the 30s beginning on Sunday and lasting through the end of Christmas week.
