For the third year in a row the Class A and AA state champions are members of the Hiawatha Valley League.  The Zumbrota-Mazeppa Cougars repeated during the team tournament Thursday and the Kasson-Mantorville Komets captured their third straight.  Two years ago Kenyon-Wanamingo was the Class A state title holder.

Zumbrota-Mazeppa hoisted the Class A title trophy after a 31-19 win over #2 rated and seeded Frazee.  The Cougars were ranked number one all season and did not disappoint their fans.

In the championship match Cougar Head Coach Link Steffen and his assistants decided to bump up a weight from 160 pounds on up.

The move worked and is one of the reasons why Zumbrota-Mazeppa was so good this year.  Zumbrota alum Tom Weeks told KDHL listeners during the title match this year's team may have been the best in the history of the wrestling program.

It's hard to argue.  Not many teams have top ranked wrestlers at 182, 195 and 220 pounds that can jump a weight and more than hold their own.

The Kasson-Mantorville Komets ended a dream season.  Unbeaten in dual competition the Komets just breezed in the Class 2A title match 49-9 over Fairmont/Martin County West.

St. Michael-Albertville was the third seed in Class 3A and they edged top seed Shakopee in the final 30-25.

The Cougars had four wrestlers named to the Class A All-Tournament team.  106 pound sophomore Michael Majerus.  152 pound senior Sam Nordquist, 182 pound senior Caden Steffen and 220 pound junior Jacob Bennett.

Kasson-Mantorville had five representatives on the All-Tournament team in Class 2A.

106 pound eighth grader Logan Vaughn, 126 pound junior Matthew Harfmann, 138 pound eight grader Bennett Berge, 160 pound junior Dylan Andrist and 170 pound sophomore Patrick Kennedy.
