Hastings, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Dakota County man won’t have to go to prison, but his sentence for a deadly drunk driving crash on Valentine's Day calls for him to be behind bars on the anniversary of the death of his girlfriend for the next ten years.

53-year-old Michael Serres entered a guilty plea to a criminal vehicular homicide charge in June and admitted having up to a dozen drinks before he got behind the wheel and ended up causing a rollover crash that claimed the life of 49-year-old Terri Stephenson the night of February 14th. The Hampton woman was partially ejected from the pickup truck and was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck on Highway 50 between Hampton and Miesville. Serres suffered non-life threatening injuries.

At his sentencing hearing in Hastings this morning, Serres was given a stayed 57-month prison term and was placed on probation for 10-years. He was also ordered to serve 120 days in jail beginning on Valentine's Day next year and then 30-days in jail starting on the same date each year through 2029. The judge in the cases did indicate the jail time could be converted to electronic home detention if Serres meets all of the terms of his probation.
