Many of will be firing up the grill sometime this holiday weekend, so here are some genuine made-in-Wisconsin tips to make sure things come off the grill perfectly!

The Memorial Day Weekend is a time for us to reflect and remember those who've given the ultimate sacrifice for our country. It's also the unofficial kick-off to the summer season. And what's more a part of summer here in Minnesota than firing up the grill?

The age-old question, though, when it comes to firing up the grill, is... just what kind of grill do you favor: charcoal or gas? I've always liked a good 'ol original Weber kettle charcoal grill. There's just something about lighting the charcoal-- which is one of the best smells of summer-- and then cooking your food over the open flame.

Of course, I also like the convenience and precision a gas grill gives you, too. For our anniversary a few years ago, my wife and I got a new Weber four-burner gas grill (complete with a sear station!) and we use it all the time. It really does allow to keep a steady temperature, which helps you not overcook things. (Which, to me, is a cardinal sin-- especially if it's a big 'ol ribeye steak.)

In fact, right now, our Weber gas grill is our ONLY grill. I'm a little ashamed to admit that because I really do like grilling on a Weber kettle charcoal grill. I think I get that from my dad, who had a patented system for perfectly grilling just about any item on the charcoal grill (keep in mind, he lived in Wisconsin his entire life-- and like to have a beer or two while grilling.):

+ Arrange charcoal in the grill in the shape of a pyramid and add the appropriate amount of lighter fluid (not too much!). Crack open a beer.

+ Add fire, and wait for coals to fully light-- about 30 minutes or so. While you're waiting, finish your first beer.

+ Place your items on the grill. Open another beer. Grill for about 5 minutes.

+ Flip items you're grilling. Grill for another 5 minutes. Finish your beer.

+ After about 10 or 12 minutes, removed items from grill and head inside. Oh, and crack open one more beer.

If you follow these rules, no matter how well your items were, in fact, grilled, you really won't care! Have a great weekend!
