Yesterday, my co-workers and I worked on a Two Rivers Habitat for Humanity home on Mosher Ave in Owatonna, and yes, I did get sunburnt.

Despite my lobster arms, I had a great day! I loved learning how to work tools and piece together a foundation. I think I missed my calling! The process was rewarding, exhausting and exhilarating.

During my time on the site, my team and I completed a wall. My favorite part was flushing boards and screwing them together with my trusty drill. (Do I sound like a professional or what?)

Get this: I also learned how to use a hand-saw. Now, I know what you're thinking. They trusted Shel B, a woman with no construction background, with a hand saw?! The answer is yes! Of course, I did get a thorough walk-through before going to town on the boards.

The staff/builders who supervise are there to guide and teach you. It doesn't matter if you've never touch a hammer in your life! There's a task for everyone, and maybe you'll discover a love for construction like I did. Plus, they are so incredibly patience.

In summary, I highly recommend spending a day outside, hammering away. You can sign up to volunteer here! If this radio jig doesn't work out, you can catch me building homes around Owatonna.
