St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - Members of the Minnesota National Guard will be deployed in Minneapolis for the Super Bowl. At the request of the Minneapolis Mayor, Governor Mark Dayton today issued an executive order authorizing the Minnesota National Guard to assist the Minneapolis Police Department from January 26th through February 5th.

The troops are expected to help with traffic control and security details during the festivities leading up to the Super Bowl and on Super Bowl Sunday under the direction of the Minneapolis Police Department. The number of National Guard members activated for the duty will be determined by Minnesota Adjutant General Jon Jensen.

“Under the Governor’s Executive Order, the Minnesota National Guard will take the necessary steps to help protect the lives, property, and security of Minnesotans and visitors during Super Bowl LII,” said Minnesota National Guard Adjutant General Jon Jensen. “We are committed to working with local law enforcement to support their efforts for a safe and successful event.”

In issuing the order, Governor Mark Dayton says the National Guard has been deployed at every Super Bowl since 2002. The cost of the National Guard deployment will be covered by the Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee.
