Gophers Welcome Full Capacity for Fall Sports
Goldy Gopher is ready to welcome fans back to University of Minnesota events at full capacity this fall. He might have to give virtual high fives or maybe a vague fist bump depending on health protocol at that time. The university announced the plan for 100% capacity for football, volleyball and soccer in a news release this week.
Director of Athletics Mark Coyle states, "We are excited to safely welcome fans back into our venues. We will follow all university, local and state guidelines, and we are looking forward to our fans once again providing a tremendous advantage for our Gopher student-athletes when they compete on campus."
"We are so thankful for our fans, donors and sponsors who helped provide necessary resources for our student-athletes last season, but we missed seeing and hearing them at games. We cannot wait to welcome everyone back to campus in a few months, while still providing our fans with a safe and enjoyable experience."
The football team opens its season on Thursday, September 2 against Ohio State at 7 pm. Other home opponents for Minnesota include Miami (Ohio), Bowling Green, Nebraska, Maryland, Illinois and Wisconsin. Schedules for volleyball and soccer are still being completed.
Minnesota running back Mohamed Ibrahim was named as a Preseason All-America recently. He led the Big Ten is rushing attempts (201), rushing yards (1,076), rushing yards per game (153.7), rushing touchdowns (15), scoring (90), and all-purpose yards per game (168.4). He tied the school record for rushing touchdowns in a game, scoring four in both the Maryland and Illinois games.
