Goodhue Girls Overcome Turnovers to Beat Caledonia
The Goodhue Wildcats used some clutch free throw shooting in a 50-41 hard fought win over the Caledonia Warriors in the HVL vs TRC Showdown in Rochester Saturday night.
The game featured two ranked teams with Goodhue #2 in Class A and Caledonia ranked #12 in the latest Minnesota Basketball News Class AA poll.
The Lodermiers led the way for Goodhue. 6'3 junior post Lexie Lodermeier and 6'0 senior Sydney Lodermeier each had 15 points in the win.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 8-2 lead to start the game but Caledonia hit some threes to take a 25-22 lead into halftime.
The Warriors made four three point baskets in each half and shot a number of threes.
In fact that dominance by Goodhue in the paint was the difference in the game. It got them to the free throw line while Caledonia did not.
Goodhue was 9 of 14 from the charity stripe and Caledonia 5 of 6. The Warriors finished the game with 8 three point baskets and Goodhue had 5.
Caledonia had a 7 point lead in the second half before Goodhue would tie the game at 38 and then go on a 9-0 run to take control of the game.
Most of that run was ignited by the play of Lexie and Sydney Lodermeier. The cousins took over during that stretch with Lexie connecting inside and hitting free throws and Sydney knocking down a prime time three pointer to pretty much seal the victory.
Caledonia was led by 5'10 Katie Tornstrom. The athletic junior hit a couple of threes and finished with 11 points.
Goodhue finished the game with 20 turnovers and Caledonia had 17 by my unofficial numbers. In recent years it hasn't been too often that Goodhue has been outscored in points off turnovers.
Caledonia had 14 points and Goodhue 10 points off turnovers.
Goodhue Head Coach Josh Wieme told KDHL following the game with freshmen and an eighth grader playing significant minutes there will be some mistakes at this juncture of the season.
The Wildcats are 6-1 and Caledonia fell to 5-1 on the season.
Tuesday Goodhue hosts Dover-Eyota and Thursday entertains Cannon Falls before the Christmas break.
