The Faribault Falcons girls hockey team scored three goals in each period in a 9-1 win over the Rochester Mayo Spartans at the Faribault Ice Arena this evening.  There was running time in the third period.  Junior Olivia Williamson had a hat trick and an assist.  On senior night Kayli Burkhartzmeyer enjoyed a four point night with two goals and two assists.  Senior Ellie Knutson tallied a goal and an assist.  Freshman Regan Bulger provided two assists.

The Falcons outshot the Spartans 38 to 11.  16-5 in the first period.  13-5 in the second period and 9-1 in the third.  Faribault scored two shorthanded goals and a power play goal during the game.  Falcon goalie junior Mikayla Bohner stopped 10 shots to pick up her 16th win of the season.  Bohner was a guest on the Faribault Coaches Show from KFC in Faribault earlier in the day and told us when she was young, her mom was rehabbing from a knee injury. The physical therapist suggested Mikayla take up hockey.  She tried all the positions as a youngster and fell in love with being a goalie.

The five Faribault seniors were honored before the game and presented gifts to their parents with pictures taken in net.  They were also chosen for our Faribault State Farm Insurance agents Faribault players of the game.  Burkhartzmeyer, Knutson, Tori Pavel, Alexis Velander and Olivia Morelan.

Burkhartzmeyer scored the first goal of the game 4:23 into the first period unassisted then got her 16th goal of the season at 9:51 assisted by sophomore Rylie Starkson (16).  Knutson scored her 10th goal of the season at 12:54 on an assist by Bulger.

1:01 into the second period Rochester Mayo got back into the game with goal by sophomore Jasmin Geike.  It was her 7th goal of the year and was assisted by junior Haley Handelman (1) and junior Nakya Renn (6).   The Falcons answered a few minutes later (4:13) when Williamson buried the puck on an assist from Bulger (5).  Starkson achieved her 15th goal of the season unassisted at 8:21.  Junior Abigail Goodwin picked up her 10th goal on assists by Burkhartzmeyer and Williamson (20).

In the third period Pavel got her second goal of the year at 3:31 assisted by Knutson (8).  Williamson then got a power play goal at 9:35 assisted by Burkhartzmeyer (13).  Williamson went into the game 5th in the state in scoring after being in the top two spots all season.  Her 6th shorthanded goal of the year came with 10 seconds left in the game and was her 37th goal of the season.  It was unassisted.

The Falcons were awarded 4 points with the victory and are back in second place in the Big Nine with 30 points.  Northfield has clinched the conference title.

Faribault is scheduled to play #6 Class 1A ranked Rochester Lourdes at the Faribault Ice Arena Monday night at 7:00 p.m.  If the game is played it will be on KDHL Radio, 920 AM.  Coverage begins 6:45 p.m.  The best way to listen is to download the FREE KDHL app.  It's static free.

A winter storm warning has been issued and both Faribault and Rochester are in it.  The warning calls for 6 to 8 inches of snow, winds picking up to blow the powdery precipitation and dangerous wind chills.  The game was moved from last Tuesday to Monday due to Lourdes having no school because of freezing rain in Rochester last Tuesday.

The winner of the game will undoubtedly be the top seed in the section.
