Elevated Fire Danger Across Southern Minnesota Again Today
Near critical fire weather conditions are in the forecast for southeastern Minnesota again today, with a Red Flag Warning issued for southwest parts of the state.
Ahead of a cold front moving into western Minnesota this afternoon, strong southwest winds will develop across south central into east central Minnesota, with gusts has high as 35 mph expected. These strong winds will combine with humidity values dropping below 35 percent to create near-critical fire weather conditions this afternoon.
The most concerning fire weather conditions and upgrade to Red Flag conditions is expected south of the Minnesota River where the combination of wind gusts exceeding 30mph and RH dropping into the 20s is expected through the afternoon.
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
