Saturday afternoon after I left the Goodhue County Fair I headed up to the Dakota County Fair in Farmington. Yes I was asked to be the "official" judge for the BBQ contest at the Dakota County Fair. The judging began at 5PM. However, the contestants had to bring their grills and everything they needed to the Dakota County Fairgrounds and actually prepare their entries at the fair! That meant contestants had to be at the Dakota County Fair already Saturday morning.

One of the fringe benefits of being at KDHL is being asked to do things like judging a BBQ contest! Maybe because I have been here more than 20 years I have gotten to know a lot of people, including a great-grandmother, Olive Huff. For many years Olive has been in charge of the foods open class department at the Dakota County Fair. There are four BBQ classes to be judged, pork, beef, poultry and ribs. After each class I always have the contestant come up on stage and tell everyone how they prepared their entry. After the last class then everyone can sample each entry themselves.
