Starting today residents in Minnesota can download a new app to get notified if you've come in contact with COVID-19.

The technology in the app was developed by Apple and Google and is currently being used by 20 other states and several countries around the world. The app is free and available in the Android Google Play Store and Apple App store.

According to the official website, once you download the app, "the app will generate an anonymous key for your phone—the key is a random number. To help ensure that these random keys can’t be used to identify you or your location, they change every 10-20 minutes."

The app will check daily for positive COVID-19 results and compare those results against the list of keys that your phone, and presumably you, has encountered in the last two weeks.

The app protects your data by using Bluetooth technology to share the private keys from phone to phone in the background and won't drain your battery.

If the app identifies that you have had contact with someone that has tested positive for COVID-19 you'll get a notification from the app and instructions what to do next. COVIDaware MN is made available to the public free of charge by the State of Minnesota in partnership with the nonprofit PathCheck Foundation.
