Changes May Be Coming To Troublesome Rochester Intersection

Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Changes may be in the future for a Rochester street intersection that has been the scene of numerous traffic wrecks, including a recent one that claimed the life of a Spring Valley woman.
The Rochester Public Works Dept. is seeking authorization to “evaluate the safety and operations of the intersection and bring back any recommendations for future improvements” at the intersection of 48th St SW and Commercial Dr SW. "
In a memo to the City Council, the department notes “Urban growth, high speeds, and recent crashes are causing concerns for residents in southwest Rochester about the intersection.”
The council is scheduled to act on the recommendation Monday.
A two-vehicle crash at the intersection on July 27th claimed the life of 63-year-old Stacey York. She was in a vehicle that collided with a car and died at the scene. York’s 19-year-old daughter was driving the vehicle and she suffered serious injuries. A 31-year-old Rochester woman was driving the other vehicle. Two children - ages 5 and 10 - were in her car. Their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
According to her obituary, “ Stacey York has worked with children and families for over 40 years. She taught Child Development and Family Studies at Rochester Community and Technical College for the past 14 years. Before that, she held the same position at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. She actively incorporated diversity training and multicultural perspectives from people of color in all her courses. “
