Cannon Falls Season Ends With Tough Loss
The Cannon Falls Bombers defeated St. Charles 3-1 Saturday to get to a step away from the finals,
Unfortunately for the Bombers an effort to preserve pitching by keeping counts down for the final round didn't materialize.
They lost 5-2 to Caledonia. The Warriors fell to Pine Island 8-2 earlier in the day setting up the second showdown between the two teams in the week.
It was Caledonia who outlasted Cannon Falls at Hudson Field in Rochester on Memorial Day 5-3 in nine innings.
Jack Meyers, senior, threw 71 pitches in the win over St. Charles before Ryan Hjellming, junior, took the mound at Mayo field and delivered over five innings of no hit ball.
Hjellming was dealing with 8 strikeouts against 16 batters faced. The only baserunner for the Warriors got on by walk.
Cannon Falls scored a run in the first inning thanks to hits by Preston Schoenfelder and Jack Meyers. They added a run in the bottom of the 5th inning.
With one out #9 hitter Ethan Deutsch was hit by a pitch. He went to second on a single by Schoenfelder. Micah Nelson walked to load the bases, Hjellming scored Deutsch with a fly out to center before Jack Meyers flew out to end the threat.
Hjellming threw his 70th pitch to the first batter of the 6th inning making the count 1-2 before Head Coach Bucky Lindow came out of the dugout and made a change. The move would have allowed Hjellmng and Meyers to be available for the two games they would have to play Tuesday against Pine Island to get to state.
Lindow handed the ball to Abram Tenneson, sophomore, who finished the batter with a strikeout.
Will Allen, Warrior centerfielder jumped on the first pitch to him and hammered a one out double, The next batter struck out before lead-off hitter in the batting order Jack Schmitz clubbed a 1-1 pitch opposite field home run to tie the game.
Temnneson gave way to Ethan Albers, senior who threw one pitch to end the scoring.
In the scheduled final inning Albers got the first out before walking the cleanup hitter Ben Stemper. Stemper stole second base. A pick-off attempt got him to third base when the ball went into centerfield.
A grounder to third ended with a errant throw to first base scoring Stemper.
Tyson Ginther hit a single to score a run, stole second during a Will Allen at bat that ended in a single. Ginther scored when a ball was thrown over the third baseman's head.
When their half of the seventh ended the Warriors had a 3 run lead.
Bottom of the seventh Grady Meyers singled for Cannon Falls and Deutsch gained first on a error by the shortstop.
Caledonia pitcher Reid Klug got Schoenfelder to pop out, Nelson to fly out and Hjellming to fly out to end the game.
Klug finished the game throwing 100 pitches, 64 strikes with 3 strikeouts, 2 walks, 2 hit batters while allowing 5 hits.
Caledonia goes back to Mayo Field Tuesday to play Pine Island where the Panthers need one win and Warriors two victories.
Cannon Falls ends their season 19-6. The Hiawatha Valley League Champions had a 16 game winning streak after opening the season with 3 losses.
The Warriors are 17-7, Pine Island is 19-5.
