The Faribault Bethlehem Academy Cardinals hung on to a 20-18 win over the New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds in Section 2A football in Northfield tonight.  The Cardinals needed to find another field because the Faribault Falcons had a home game also.  BA Athletic Director Ed Friesen was appreciative Northfield was willing to let them use their field so the Cardinals fans didn't have to travel too far.

The #4 seed Cardinals and #5 seed Greyhounds did not disappoint on the windy, cold night with the game in doubt until the final minute.  New Ulm Cathedral got the ball to start the game and on the second play a fumble was recovered by Ben Cohen to give BA the ball at the 50 yard line.

Following a Josh Oathoudt 6 yard run the Cardinals connected on a Jack Jandro to Charlie King 40 yard pass to the 4 of the Greyhounds.  On the next play Jandro scored at 10:26 of the quarter on a 4 yard run.  The extra point kick was no good.

Cathedral answered with 4:30 to go in the first quarter on a four down and four at the Cardinals 8 yard line.  Quarterback Chris Knowles threw an easy pitch and catch for a score to Jon Zinniel.  The two point pass was no good and the score was 6-6.

New Ulm Cathedral took the lead with 4:48 to go in the half on a 1 yard touchdown run by Knowles.  The two point conversion run was stuffed by the Cardinals.

Bethlehem Academy responded right away scoring with 1:04 to go in the half on a 3 yard touchdown run by Oathoudt.  Two point conversion run was not successful.

Score at the half was tied at 12.  There was no scoring in the third quarter.

With 10:43 to go in the game Oathoudt had a 15 yard touchdown run.  He also ran in for the two point conversion which proved to be the difference in the game.

The Greyhounds scored with 2:16 to go on an Eric Furth 11 yard run.  Two point conversion pass was no good.

New Ulm Cathedral then recovered an onside kick to make things interesting but could not convert on a 4th down and 11 after earlier in the quarter coming up with a pass completion on a 4th down and 13 yards to go.

In fact the Greyhounds were 7 of 10 on 4th down conversions and 1 of 13 on third down.  Bethlehem Academy finished 0 for 3 on 4th down and 2 of 8 on 3rd down conversions.

New Ulm Cathedral had the ball 33 minutes 14 seconds while Bethlehem Academy had possession 14:46.  The Greyhounds had 21 first downs, the Cardinals 14.

Four New Ulm Cathedral turnovers proved costly.  A interception and fumle in the first half and fumble and interception in the second half.

Oathoudt led Bethlehem Academy with 182 yards rushing on 21 carries.

Jack Jandro earned the Malecha's Auto Body of Faribault "Crunch time tackle of the game."

The Faribault State Farm Insurance agents Faribault players of the game were Oathoudt, Brady Strodtman, Andrew Donahue and Ben Cohen.
