Albert Lea, MN (KROC-AM News) - An Albert Lea man has been convicted of all of the charges brought against him following a series of shootings and a lengthy standoff.

A Freeborn County Jury today found 22-year-old Devon Weiland guilty of three counts of first-degree attempted murder and three counts of second-degree assault. He is scheduled to be sentenced on December 19.

Weiland was accused of opening fire from his third-floor window in an Albert Lea apartment building on November 29, 2020. Three people were wounded, including an Albert Lea police officer who was called to the property by Weiland to investigate a noise complaint. The bullet struck the officer's protective vest, which prevented him from suffering a serious injury. A resident of the apartment complex was shot when he went outside to check on his vehicle and a third person suffered a gunshot wound to his leg when a bullet passed through the door of his vehicle as he was driving past the apartment building on his way to work.

The criminal complaint says Weiland told investigators that he fired about 75 bullets during the standoff. He eventually surrendered after he suffered an injury to his forehead that resulted in heavy bleeding. Just before he surrendered, Weiland fired a number of bullets through his apartment door after police officers stationed in the hallway outside of the unit tried to use tear gas to dislodge him.
