Saying goodbye to someone is often a bittersweet moment. It is a little easier when you know that you'll more than likely run into that same person around town or out in the community. After 15 years of volunteering with the Humane Society of Freeborn County, their shelter director, Christa DeBoer, has stepped down.

The farewell from Christa was shared by the Humane Society of Freeborn County.

Hi Everyone!
On June 1st I celebrated 15 years at my job at the shelter, prior to that I started fostering and volunteering in 1996 😊 I’ve been honored and blessed to be part of something that means so much to me. I’ve met and made so many friends animal and human! This chapter of my life has been a great privilege to serve the animals at the shelter. So much positive and some heartbreak as well but I wouldn’t change a thing unless I could give them all a forever home and the gift of time here with us ❤️
Today was my last day as the Shelter Director, , I accepted another job and feel like the time is right for myself to make a change. Thank you all for the relationships we have made, all of you who donate and adopt! I thank each and everyone who volunteers or has, it’s amazing the passion and love you all put forth for the animals.
The show will keep going on at the Shelter as I know everyone will continue to support it from inside and out!
Again, thank you all! I’ll miss it so very much and know I’ll be visiting often and probably helping clean kennels when I can as not sure I can stay away long 😜
Christa
P.S. I’ve attached a little collage of some of the friends I’ve made over the years! Such awesome memories for me!
I got to know Christa during my time living in Albert Lea, living just a few feet away from the shelter. My wife often volunteered on Saturday mornings, at 5a, to go to the shelter to clean it top to bottom with other volunteers. Christa and the other volunteers really did a great job of growing awareness of the shelter through partnering with area businesses for fundraising and embracing social media as a way to showcase animals available for adoption.
While Christa is stepping away from her role with the Humane Society, it seems like she won't be away for long as she pledged to come back and help out when she has the time to do so.
