The Burger That Changed Everything: Meet the Juicy Lucy of Minnesota
America loves hamburgers. PBS says we devour 50 billion annually, and the average person eats three a week. Minnesotans are no exception. We're obsessed with burgers, especially our very own famous creation, the Juicy Lucy.
Now, if you're a true Minnesotan, you know the deal with a Juicy Lucy. It's a burger with molten hot cheese inside the patty, and you have to be super careful with that first bite, or you'll definitely burn your mouth!

You can find cheese-stuffed burgers all over the place now, but if you want to try the original, you've got to head to either Matt's Bar & Grill or the 5-8 Club in Minneapolis. Both of these classic spots claim to have invented the Juicy Lucy.
Matt's Bar & Grill says the burger came to be when a regular asked for cheese between two burger patties. When the customer bit into this new, super hot burger, he supposedly yelled, "That's one juicy Lucy!"
That reaction was enough for the restaurant to add it to the menu, but they rushed it and accidentally forgot the "i" when getting it printed, and that's how it became the "Jucy Lucy" at Matt's. Time Magazine recognized it as one of the most influential burgers of all time.
The 5-8 Club doesn't have a story about when or how the burger was created, but they swear the burger was their idea and proudly spell "Juicy Lucy" correctly on their menu.
The 5-8 Club's signature burger has been featured on the Food Network, Travel Channel, and Jimmy Fallon even showcased the popular sandwich during Super Bowl LII.
I've tried both places and think they're both really good.
