Eagan, MN (KROC-AM News)- A hometown player is the latest prominent member of the Minnesota Vikings to cut from the team.

The Vikings announced Friday morning that they are cutting Wide Receiver Adam Thielen. NFL Network’s Tom Pelisserro reports the team and Minnesota native had discussed a restructuring deal that would’ve lowered the wide receiver’s nearly $20 million cap hit for the upcoming season, but Thielen instead opted for free agency.

Thielen had 70 catches and 6 touchdowns for the Vikings last season. He had 534 receptions and 55 touchdowns over the nine seasons he spent in a Vikings uniform. Vikings General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah released the following statement:

"Adam will forever be a part of the Minnesota Vikings family and history. Setting the standard with his play on the field, being a selfless teammate, and making a permanent impact in the community, Adam's influence is significant. We are grateful for everything he brought to the Vikings organization since arriving in 2013, and I'm thankful to have had the opportunity to work with him over the last year. He is the best representation of what the Minnesota Vikings should stand for. I wish nothing but the best for Adam, Caitlin and their entire family."

The Detroit Lakes native ranks third in team history in receptions (534) and receiving touchdowns (55) and fourth in receiving yards (6,682). The 32-year-old broke into the league playing special teams for the Vikings in 2013 after going undrafted. He played his college football at Division II Minnesota-State Mankato. He began playing wide receiver for the Vikings in 2014.
