Third Person Charged in Downtown Rochester Mugging That Sent Victim to the Hospital

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- A third suspect has been charged in connection with a mugging that occurred in downtown Rochester in early October.

That’s according to a criminal complaint filed in Olmsted County Court on Friday. The alleged robbery and assault occurred on the morning of October 3. 

Court documents say four suspects are involved. The complaints say all four suspects were seen outside of Kathy’s Pub with the victim.

Two of the suspects were seen entering a vehicle. A surveillance camera captured footage of the victim and one of the suspects walking west on 3rd St. SW around 1:45 a.m. on October 3.

A second person is then seen coming up behind the victim and punching him after the first suspect grabbed hold of the victim as the three were in front of the 318 commons building, the charges say. 

The suspects then fled north and got into the vehicle the two other suspects previously entered, the court document says. 

The victim, who was brought to a hospital after the mugging, reported the assailants stealing $1,000-$2,000 in cash from him, court documents say. 

Investigators identified the person suspected of walking up behind the victim as 23-year-old Mohamed Ahmed Abdi of Rochester.

He was the first person to be arrested in the case and is facing charges of first-degree aggravated robbery, third-degree assault and felony theft. 

The second person charged in the case is accused of acting as the “getaway driver.

He is identified in court documents as 20-year-old Alaaudin Abdulqdia Ali of Rochester and is facing charges of aiding and abetting counts of robbery, theft and third-degree assault. 

Rochester police investigators identified 21-year-old Omar Mohamud Ahmad of Rochester as the person who is alleged to have assaulted and robbed the victim with Abdi.

Ahmad is facing charges of aiding and abetting first-degree aggravated robbery, third-degree assault and felony theft. 

He made his first court appearance Friday morning. The fourth suspect has not been charged in the case.
