Officers responded to the Country Inn and Suites in the 4300 block of Hwy. 52 and met with the victim who told police she had rented the room on Wednesday and that Tavares was among a group of people she had invited to the room.

She said Tavares had lived with her at an apartment in the past when Tavares was homeless. On Thursday morning, the woman reported hearing Tavares pounding on the door to her room and covering the peep hole, the complaint says.

She said Tavares entered the room, charged at her, punched her in the face, threw her in the room and kicked her body, the charges say.

The alleged assault stopped when house keeping staff entered the room. Police found and captured Tavares in the area of Walmart in northwest Rochester.

Conditional bail for Tavares was set at $25,000 following his first court appearance Friday. He’s due back in court later this month.
