Update: Olmsted County Sheriff's Office Identifies Man Who Initiated Southeast MN School Lockdowns

Byron, MN (KROC-AM News)- The Byron High School and Kasson Mantorville Schools, Triton Schools and Hayfield Schools initiated lockdown procedures Thursday morning.

So far limited information is available, however officials from the school districts indicate the decisions to lockdown were made out of an abundance of caution.

Byron, Kasson-Mantorville, Triton & Hayfield Schools Initiate Lockdowns Thursday Morning
An email sent to the families of Byron students said the high school entered a soft lockdown at the request of the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office around 9:20 a.m.
The soft lockdown was due to “concerning behavior from a community member.” Byron Schools Superintendent Nate Walbruch also said no threat was made towards the school.
An email sent to Kasson-Mantorville families indicated the district’s school initiated a lockdown around 9:40 a.m. after being advised to do so by the Kasson Police Department.
Staff, students and visitors are not allowed to enter or exit the district’s buildings during the lockdown.
“At this time, there is no additional information we can share. We will continue to work closely with law enforcement and will provide updates as soon as it is safe to do so,” the email from Kasson-Mantorville Superintendent Beth Giese reads.
The Olmsted County Sheriff's Office released the following statement:
On September 18th, 2025, at approximately 9:00 am, the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office was advised by the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office of a potential concerning incident in Olmsted County. Out of an abundance of caution, we contacted Byron Public Schools and requested they place their buildings on a soft lockdown. Currently there is no direct or active threat to the safety of the school buildings, students, or staff. This is an active investigation so no further information can be released at this time. We are in on-going communication with Byron Public Schools.
It’s not yet clear if the Kasson-Mantorville lockdown is related to incident in Byron, however the email sent to Kasson-Mantorville district families says “Other schools in the area have also taken similar steps.”
The Hayfield School District is also in a lockdown. A post on the district’s Facebook page informed the community that they initiated the lockdown shortly after 10:00 Thursday morning.
