Richmond, MN (KROC-AM News) - A 23-year-old man was killed yesterday evening when his car crashed into a central Minnesota lake.

The Stearns County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded around 8:30 p.m. to a 911 call from a watercraft operator who reported finding a vehicle in Horseshoe Lake near the town of Richmond. The caller indicated that there was a person inside the vehicle.

The responding deputies and police officers from Richmond arrived at the scene and assisted citizens who were pulling the young man out of the vehicle. He was brought to shore, and despite attempts at life-saving measures, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was identified as Tate William Lehnen of Rice.

The Sheriff's Office says investigators believe Lehnen was driving on a road along the lakeshore when he overcorrected on a left-hand curve, which sent the car over the oncoming lane of traffic and down a steep embankment leading into the lake.
