Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Retired Bishop Bernard Harrington has passed away.

The Diocese of Winona-Rochester announced his passing on Saturday. He was 91 years old.

According to the diocese, Harrington was named Bishop of Winona in January 1999 and served until May 2009. He was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Detroit in 1959, and before coming to southeastern Minnesota, he was appointed an auxiliary bishop of the Detroit Archdiocese.

A statement from the Diocese of Winona-Rochester credited Bishop Harrington with overseeing a number of initiatives. These included ordaining the first group of deacons within the diocese and expanding services offered by Catholic Charities. The diocese also noted that he served as bishop during the Boston clergy abuse scandals and directed the implementation of “Safe Environment” practices in the Winona-Rochester diocese.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
