Cannon Falls, MN (KROC-AM News) - Three children were critically injured and their mother was seriously hurt after a fire broke out in their apartment this afternoon.

A news release issued by the Cannon Falls Police Department says the fire at the Cannon Valley Apartments was reported at 1:14 PM. The first officer to arrive at the scene encountered the mother, who informed the officer that three children were inside the apartment and she had been cut trying to get them. At that point, the officer reported a bedroom in the apartment was engulfed in flames.

The officer responded by breaking out the windows to another bedroom and the living room. The news release indicates one of the children was spotted by a member of an ambulance crew and a second child could be seen in the living room.

After clearing the broken glass from a window, the emergency medical services member climbed into the burning apartment and handed both children to a police officer and another ambulance crew member. A firefighter then found the third child, who was also handed to an officer.

Oxygen and first aid were administered at the scene before the three children and their mother were transported to the Cannon Falls Hospital. The children were later airlifted to a larger trauma center, reportedly in the Twin Cities, for further treatment. An update on their medical conditions is not available.

The remaining residents of the building have been displaced by the fire and representatives of the American Red Cross were called to help them find temporary housing.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
