Northern MN Historical Society To Sign Thief: ‘Return It Anonymously’

An old road sign in Northern Minnesota has disappeared, and a local historical museum is asking the thief to return it, no questions asked. The real question is, will the thief have a change of heart, or will they keep the sign for themselves?

Moose Lake Area Historical Society Wants The Sign Back

The Moose Lake Area Historical Society posted to social media about a month ago that a historical sign had gone missing. The group, which is hosting a program about that sign and where the road leads from Point Douglas near Hastings to Lake Superior as part of a military road, is tomorrow. While the museum is upset, it sounds like they are trying to appeal to the thief, as they simply just want it back, without any questions.

This road sign belongs in its original home, or in the Moose Lake Historical Society area museum. We are trying to share history, not covet it for personal fulfillment. The original post was back in June, but other social media pages started sharing the news yesterday, meaning the theft may have taken place more recently than the post from the historical society.

Historically Significant Road, Many Aren't Aware Of

The Military Road was authorized by Congress in 1850. This 177-mile road was built to connect river and lake navigation. Running from Point Douglas, which is near Hastings, to Lake Superior. It was initially meant to connect military equipment and personnel from the Mississippi/St. Croix Rivers to Lake Superior.

The former military road runs along what is now Highway 95, Highway 8, Interstate 35, Highway 23, and Highway 61.
