Officers from several agencies responded to an officer-involved shooting in Minnesota after a man armed with a chainsaw exited a home and refused to comply with commands.

Around 10:30 PM on June 11th, police received a report of a domestic incident. A second 911 call followed, stating that someone inside the home was armed with knives.

When Brooklyn Center Police arrived on the scene, a crisis negotiator was asked to join the effort. Officers informed a male occupant that he was under arrest, and that’s when he exited the home wielding a chainsaw.

Officers initially attempted non-lethal methods, shooting the man with pepper balls and 40mm rubber bullets. However, these methods failed to stop him, and officers were forced to use their firearms.

Man Hospitalized, Investigation Underway

The suspect received medical treatment at the scene and was transported to a hospital, where he remains in stable condition. Brooklyn Center Police stated, “There is no danger to the public. This incident remains under investigation and no further information will be released at this time.”

A chainsaw was recovered at the scene. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on critical incident leave, per standard procedure.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been asked to lead the investigation into the use-of-force incident. This is a common protocol in cases involving officer-involved shootings.
