New York Mills, MN (MinnesotaNow) - Authorities in northwestern Minnesota are investigating a deadly dog attack.

According to a news release issued by the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call was received around 1 p.m. Sunday from a 51-year-old woman who reported that she was transporting herself and her young grandson to the hospital. The Sheriff’s Office says the woman told dispatchers that both of them had suffered significant dog bite injuries.

Attack Occurred at the Grandmother's Home

The news release says Otter Tail County sheriff’s deputies met the woman and child at the emergency room of the hospital in Perham. At that point, they were informed that the 3-year-old boy had been attacked by an adult American bulldog after he climbed into an enclosed area where the dog was housed at the woman’s home in New York Mills.

The statement says the young boy died from his injuries at the hospital. His grandmother, who suffered serious injuries while attempting to rescue the child, was transported to a hospital in Fargo for further treatment.

Dog Put Down

The Sheriff’s Office says the dog responsible for the attack was destroyed by authorities.
