What to Expect at the Faribault Winter Farmers’ Market?

The mission of the Faribault Winter Farmers’ Market is to create a space for Faribault and surrounding residents to buy locally grown, homemade goods in the winter season while promoting small farmers and bakers that support the local community. Vendors for the 201920 Faribault Winter Farmers’ Market season include twelve returning vendors and more than ten new vendors. The list is still growing. New vendor Theresa Bentz of Get Bentz Farm said that she’s excited to participate in the Faribault Winter Farmers’ Market because “I’m passionate about supporting local food and fiber communities. Three New Local Fiber Farmers

New vendors include Cannon River Fiber Farm (Dundas), Dresow Family Farm (Lonsdale) and Get Bentz Farm (Northfield). Each will offer yarn and wool/fiber products from the different breeds of sheep or alpacas raised on their farm. “There is a growing interest in sourcing fiber products locally,” according to Tiffany Tripp, Market Coordinator. “This will be a great opportunity for the community to learn about local options to source fiber products and speak with the farmers to learn about the quality and benefits of wool from different types of animals.”

New!!! Allina Health Market Bucks Now Accepted

Allina Health Market Bucks will be accepted at the Faribault Winter Farmers’ Market this year for the first time. Allina’s Health Market Buck program is a way to increase access to local fresh foods to community members. Allina Market Bucks are distributed by Allina health providers and community partners. Allina Health Market Bucks may be used to purchase food items at the Faribault Winter Farmers’ Market. Vendors accepting Allina Market Bucks will have a sign posted at their table that states “Allina Health Bucks accepted here.”

New Outdoor Market December 21st at Keepsake Cidery

This year the final winter market of 2019 will be an outdoor market. On December 21st, Faribault Winter Farmers’ Market vendors will join other local vendors at Keepsake Cidery in Dundas for their first Solstice Market from 1:00 – 5:00pm. This outdoor market with will have a European market flare with a heated tent, local crafts, and local food vendors, outside grilling, fires and solstice celebrations. Keepsake’s Tasting Room will be open from 11:00am – 8:00pm where folks can warm up with Keepsake’s hard cider or local apple cider and grab local eats.

How it began:

The Faribault Winter Farmers’ Market began as a Pop-up Market three years ago. In 2016, founder Tiffany Tripp wondered where she could sell their farm raised chicken and duck eggs once the regular farmers’ market season ended. She talked with other vendors that offered products available year-round, such as maple syrup, honey, baked goods, and there was interest in selling through the holidays. After a few conversations with some local leaders, she decided to hold the pop-up market at the Paradise Center for the Arts, partially because of its location in historic downtown Faribault, but also because the Paradise hosts the Holly Days Sale every year in November and December featuring local artisans. It was (and still is) a great collaboration that provided a home for the winter market and helped bring in new people to the Paradise Center for the Arts building. In its first year, the Faribault Winter Market had twelve vendors and was set up in Paradise Center for the Arts lobby. Of the original vendors, eight have continued with the market every year.

In 2016, Tripp also participated in the Linden Hills Winter Farmers’ Market in Minneapolis where she met the owners of Soul Mate Salmon, Tollef Monson and Adelia Myrick. They debuted their Alaskan caught wild salmon fillets at the Faribault Winter Farmers’ that year and have returned every year since as a guest vendor, being the only vendor not offering a locally produced or made product. When asked why do you return every year to the Faribault Winter Farmers’ Market, Myrick and Monson said “Since we first were invited to participate in the winter market, we have been blown away by the reception the community has given us. Coming from a very small town ourselves, it makes us feel very comfortable to come be part of a community this size. We feel right at home and wouldn’t miss it!” Soul Mate Salmon will be returning this year on November 23rd, December 7th and December 21st. They’ll have new products this year including smaller 8oz salmon fillets, sushi grade sockeye and coho salmon fillets, and a limited supply of garlic pepper smoked salmon strips.

Due to the limited space and the Holly Days Sale, that coincides with the market before the holidays, the Faribault Winter Farmers’ Market focuses on local foods and farm-raised products such as goat milk soap, lotions and fiber.
