Since losing their season opener to Goodhue, the Zumbrota-Mazeppa Cougars have reeled off nine straight wins.

Thursday night a makeup game was played by the Cougars in the Cannon Falls Bombers' Hangar and I was there for KDHL to see Zumbrota-Mazeppa dominate the second half en route to a 58-46 win.

The score at the half was Zumbrota-Mazeppa 27, Cannon Falls 23.

Cannon Ace Hardware provided a points in the paint feature that showed Cannon Falls outscoring the Cougars 16-14 at the half. However, the Cougars turned that stat in their favor in the second half, outscoring the Bombers 20-8 in the Cannon Ace Hardware paint.

The Cougars aggressively attacked the basket and got to the free throw line as a byproduct of their aggression. Zumbrota was 14 of 22 from the free throw line and Cannon Falls finished 4 of 6.

Six-foot-4 senior Alex Guse was the man in the post for the Cougars and led all players with 22 points, 14 in the paint. Six-foot-2 junior Jacob Niebuhr added 10 points and 6-foot junior Robvon Jackson had eight points and a handful of rebounds. Those three guys were chosen Milo Peterson Ford of Kenyon, Ford Tough players of the game.

The Milo Peterson Ford of Kenyon Ford Tough players for Cannon Falls were 5-foot-10 junior Ryan Dirckx, 6-foot senior Jake Christenson and 6-foot-2 senior Jared Anderson. Dierckx tallied 11 points, Christenson 10 and Anderson seven.

The Cougars are now 9-1 overall and 3-1 in Hiawatha Valley League play and the Bombers are 2-3 in the conference and 2-8 overall.

The game started late because the junior varsity contest took three overtimes to conclude. Cannon Falls won 41-37 in that game.

Our feature game Friday night on KDHL is Goodhue at Kenyon-Wanamingo in girls action. Both teams are ranked in their respective classes by Minnesota Basketball News. Coverage begins at 7PM if everything is on time.
