Yesterday I shared with you what to put in your vehicle as a winter survival kit. Here are some tips for survival if you get trapped.

  • Prepare your vehicle and make sure your gas tank is at least half full.
  • Be easy to Find. Tell someone where you are going and your route.
  • If you are stuck, tie the emergency flag from your kit to your antenna or hang it out a window. At night, leave your dome light on. To reduce battery drain, have your flashers on only if you hear approaching vehicles. If you are with someone, make sure one person stays awake at all times.
  • Stay in your vehicle
  • Avoid overexertion.
  • Keep your exhaust pipe clear, run the engine only 10 minutes each hour and have a window cracked when the engine is running.
  • Don't expect to be comfortable. You want to survive until you are found.

Safe travels!

John
