The Winona Winhawks scored every time they had the football in the first half and rolled to a 53-14 win over the Faribault Falcons at Bruce Smith Field.

The weather was spectacular and the FHS band and choir gave me goosebumps with their rendition of our national anthem as a number of students unfurled a gigantic American flag at midfield to start the game.

Winona started their first drive at the 33-yard line and proceeded to go right down field to score a 5-yard touchdown. Senior Tanner Remlinger punched in the first of his three first-quarter touchdowns. He would have two-yard and three-yard TDs after the first one.

The Winhawks had a 40-0 halftime lead. They would score two more times before the end of the half. A four-yard scamper by senior quarterback P.J. Appicelli with 5:09 to go in the half and a 32-yard pass to 6-foot-4 sophomore Logan Smith with 19 seconds to go in the half.

After the extended halftime for Homecoming, Faribault did have an impressive 90-yard drive culminating in a two-yard TD by junior running back Felipe Ramirez. Their final score would be a sophomore connection between Dylan Vargo and Sam Schendel that covered nine yards. Junior kicker Eric Gannon connected on both his extra points and had a good night punting.

The Winhawks scored to additional touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Dan Jonsgaard tallied a 30-yard TD and sophomore Jonah Boelter sped 55 yards for another score.

The Falcons did outscore the Winhawks 14-13 in the second half and both teams played everyone in the game.

Winona remains unbeaten and Faribault continues to seek their first win. It doesn't get any easier for the Falcons. They travel to Mankato West next week before returning home for their season finale against Austin.
