I was listening to some Christmas music while writing a poem at my computer the other evening and realized most of my favorites are old.

My favorite of the many I enjoy is "Silent Night" because it tells the true meaning of Christmas.

It's not about a jolly fat man coming down a chimney or a red-nosed reindeer depressed because it don't look like the others.

There are other Christian Christmas tunes, but this one seems to capture the night for me. I made a list of my favorites, and when I tried to put them in a specific order it was very difficult. Go on, give it a try.

Here is the listing of my top 10.

  1. "Silent Night": German assistant priest Joesph Mohr wrote the lyrics in the form of a poem in 1816. In 1818, Franz Gruber put to text to melody on Christmas Eve and Mohr and Gruber performed it for the first time in St. Nicholas Church of Oberdorf near Salzburg.
  2. "The Christmas Song": Nat King Cole's version from 1961 is my favorite and it's just behind "Silent Night." Cole's voice is just incredible. Co-written by Mel Torme
  3. "I'll Be Home For Christmas": Bing Crosby, 1943
  4. "O Holy Night": First recorded in 1916, a 19th-century French carol
  5. "Feliz Navidad": Jose Feliciano wrote and performed this in 1970
  6. "White Christmas": Bing Crosby sings in the 1942 movie Holiday Inn and it wins Academy Award for Best Song in a movie
  7. "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas": Judy Garland sings in 1944 musical Meet Me in St. Louis
  8. "Christmas is for Children": Glen Campbell, 1968
  9. "Little Drummer Boy": Harry Simeone Chorale, 1958. It was written in 1941
  10. "Santa Claus is Coming to Town": Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi 2003 version

I made a list of about a hundred songs before deciding on my top 10. It is a lot of fun, so please share your list with us.
