The weekly weather and crop update from the Southern Research and Outreach Center at Waseca did show some crop progress last week. The weather this last week was not as cool or wet as the previous week. Temperatures averaged 59.9 degrees, 2.9 degrees below normal. Rainfall measured only 0.05 inches and that is 0.85 inches below normal. The previous week we accumulated only 30 growing degree units whereas this week it was a little better at 75 growing degree units. For the year we have now received 309.5 growing degree units, which is 4 percent below normal.

Last year at this time we had accumulated 367 growing degree units. For the month of May the average temperature was 57.8 degrees, 0.7 degrees below normal. May was the first month since August 2015 that the monthly air temperature was not above normal. That means our run of 20 months with above-normal temperatures has come to an end! This May was also wetter than normal. We received 5.1 inches of rain. That is 1.17 inches above normal.

Crop development was slow last week, but we did see some progress. The early planted corn is in the four-leaf collar stage while the later planted corn is in the three-leaf collar stage. Early planted beans are in the first trifoliolate stage while there are many bean fields that still need to be planted. I would be very pleased with just normal weather. Bring on normal.
