The first Friday in February is National Red Day. This year it is February 5.

"Go Red for Women" unites us to change our lifestyles for the better. Exercise, eat more vegetables and encourage our loved ones to live healthier together.

In general, February is American Heart Month and it is a time to learn ways to decrease heart attacks and strokes, which are the leading causes of death in both men and women. This year more than 715,000 Americans could have a heart attack or stroke.

The warning signs include chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness and digestion issues.

National Wear Red Day first began in 2003 and it has increased the awareness and education of heart attacks and strokes. With lifestyle changes that are being made, death in women has decreased by 30 percent.

We are losing weight, increasing exercise, changing to a healthier diet, all of which help to lower cholesterol. To get started, start by talking to your doctor for advice on healthier choices and find out where to get more support.

American Heart Month is a reminder that heart attacks and strokes can be prevented.

Last year, we did get the crew together and wear red. National Wear Red Day is Friday, February 5. Red for Women.
