The weather the past week and a half has been unusually warm, and it goes without saying that I like it. Sunshine and warm weather are instant mood boosters for me, and wanting to know whether it would last, I contacted Laura Lockwood from the Weathereye Weather Center.

I started the conversation by commenting on how amazingly warm last week was. Around here, we were in the 60s. This felt particularly wonderful coming off of a cooler then average February, with temperatures having been roughly 1.3 degrees below normal. The average high temperature for last week is 37 degrees. With the warm weather, we far surpassed the average and several places even broke record highs. According to Weathereye, Duluth broke its record, Chanhassen's record went from 69 to 70, St. Cloud moved from 65 to 70, and Minneapolis broke the 1927 record going from 69 to 70 degrees.

I asked Lockwood if she thought the warm weather would continue, or if winter would make another showing, and she said that a cool front is moving in and we'll see temperatures drop and possibly even a touch of snow. Any snow accumulation would be minimal, and not likely to stay very long, although, she made sure to mention that extended forecasts tend to be very difficult to foresee. By the end of the month, she expects temperatures to be climbing back up.

While winter coming to an early end seems to have everyone cheering for joy, it is not without a caveat. This year's lack of snow has caused watersheds to get extremely dry. This affects needed soil moisture and, as it becomes dangerously dry, fires could be more prevalent. According to the United States Drought Monitor, the entire state of Minnesota is currently listed as abnormally dry. Let's hope for some April showers!

A big thanks to Laura Lockwood and the Weathereye Weather Center for all of your help!
