There are not enough rest areas to accommodate all the Truckers. Truckers are pushing their DOT regulations for driving to find a place to rest. There may be an answer to help them. I-94 is one of the worst areas.

It looks like a hockey puck.(Pretty cool for the state of hockey right!) It's a magnetometer. It gets buried in the pavement at the rest areas and can tell if there is a truck parked above it and sends a signal to an equipment box that sends a message to a sign up the road, telling drivers if there is any place to park.

According to MnDOT, the plan is to equip 7 rest areas. Some east side and some west side. The theory is that most of the trucks are dropping off in the metro area. It's been in the works for 10 years and should be up and running by 2019.

The price tag? $1.4 million. A federal grant is paying for all but $177,500 for it.
