Triton scored on all but one possession while distributing the ball to 11 ball carriers and starting the season with a 50-7 victory at Byron Thursday night. Triton used two long, ball-control drives and one quick-hitting attack to build a 22-0 halftime lead.

After forcing a Bears' punt to open the game, Triton drove 84 yards in 13 plays, taking 5:30 off the clock. Drew Kelly capped it with a 14-yard dash for the end zone on his first carry of the night. He also ended the second drive, which covered 66 yards in 13 plays and 6:25 of clock time.

The Cobras got the ball back at their 13 yard line with 3:06 to go in the second quarter. Triton picked up the pace but kept the ball on the ground, used their timeouts and quarterback Brady Essig found Calvin Johnson from three yards out to score with six seconds left before halftime.

Triton raced up the field early in the third quarter. Hunter Jennings had a 39-yard run and Kelly turned in a 34-yard sprint. Anthony Avery went in from one yard out for a 29-0 lead. Byron scored on their next drive, but Triton answered on Levi Smith's one-yard plunge. The 250-fullback added a 44-dash into the end zone early in the fourth. Kyle Shadow scored the final touchdown.

While he didn't get into the end zone, Jennings was the workhorse with 167 yards on 21 carries for the Cobras. Kelly carried 11 times for 118 yards. Smith had 94 yards on 11 carries. Essig ran the option very effectively and was 5-for-8 passing.

Triton hosts defending state champ Caledonia Friday September 8 in Dodge Center.
