With the coming of summer comes the mosquitos, gnats, Asian beetles and an even more destructive bug. I'm talking about the litterbug. I know I've talked about this in the past but with the warmer weather comes outdoor activities, which is great as long as you pick up after yourself. Why should your mess be someone else's responsibility? You brought it to the event, please dispose of it properly.

Here's what got me going: On Saturday night my wife and I were on our way to a bonfire and party at a friend's house. As we drove by we noticed a bunch of young men wrapping up a day of activities at the Faribault Soccer Complex. We had to slow down because a few of the guys were darting out into the road. I noticed a few water bottles lying about on the road but hoped that they would pick them up before they left. The next morning I was traveling through that same area and was sadly disappointed. Not only were there several water bottles, but there were candy wrappers, a fast food bag and wrappings, socks, cans and more strewn about. Some of the refuse had even blown onto the middle school grounds.

It's upsetting because this facility is provided to encourage our community's youth and adults to get involved with soccer and then it's disrespected like this, with garbage just haphazardly tossed about without a thought as to who will now have to clean it up. Sadly there was a convenient trash can less than 100 feet from where they were. I took some pictures and cleaned up and disposed of the trash that was along the road.

So the next time you're out and about, please remember to pick up after yourselves. It only takes a minute and it helps our community look that much better. And if you see someone throwing their trash on the ground, ask them to pick it up, it might just be an issue of them not knowing any better.
