Admittedly in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter, but I'm a bit perplexed at how the NCAA Division III Selection Committee makes their decisions about the at-large bids extended to get into the postseason tournament.  I thinks it's great two MIAC Conference schools got in and frankly I think two more should've.  St. Johns, St. Thomas, Bethel and Concordia were nationally ranked all season and deservedly so.  The MIAC was voted the nation's second most difficult football conference in the nation by D3.com this season.  When you have four nationally rated teams in your conference you are going to see them knock each other off.  St. Johns received the automatic bid because they were the MIAC champs thanks to Augsburg's stunning 62-61 double overtime shootout win over Bethel in the snow and cold Saturday. Then St. Thomas got in.  Here's where I'm a bit perplexed.  Bethel, St. Thomas and Concordia all had 8-2 records at the end of the regular season.  Bethel defeated St. Thomas AND Concordia, St. Thomas beat Concordia but lost to St. Johns AND Bethel and Concordia defeated St. Johns but lost to St. Thomas and Bethel.  My guess is the committee decided the Bethel loss to a losing team (4-6) Augsburg was the final determining factor and because they also lost the week before to St. Johns and gave up a total of 93 points in those two losses.  Makes some sense, but I would argue the number one tiebreaker should be HEAD TO HEAD when both teams have identical records.  The loss to Augsburg came under less than ideal playing conditions and wasn't a blowout by any means.  Frankly, I'll say again I think ALL four teams deserve to be in the tourney.  I see a team with 4 losses is in (won their conference) and I admire the NCAA Division III for have a playoff system (since 1973) long before Division I developed theirs.
