Tom Hoverstad, who is a scientist at the Southern Research and Outreach Center at Waseca, will be my guest on Tuesday's AM Minnesota program. Hoverstad was on AM Minnesota a little over a month ago. He said it would be timely to be on again about April 1 with an update on the approaching growing season. About March 1 the frost was 24 inches deep and we had about 8 inches of moisture in the 5-foot soil profile.

I am guessing most of the frost will be gone, but the soil moisture I am not sure about. Looking at the drought monitor, most of Minnesota is in a drought. Typically soil moisture does not change when the soil is frozen. However, we did not have a lot of snow last winter. Other topics that we will discuss include fertility, weed management, possible insect pressure this season and weather. After the past two springs were so wet it sure would be great to have normal weather this spring, summer and fall.
