Tom Hoverstad, a scientist at the Southern Research and Outreach Center at Waseca, will be on today's AM Minnesota program. We will talk about the growing season so far and issues farmers have had to cope with. There was the frost in the middle of May, very hot weather during corn pollination and excessive rains in July and August. Remember last winter many weather forecasters were talking about a major drought this summer?

The other major issue farmers had to deal with was weeds, mainly giant ragweed and waterhemp. For a lot of years round-up was very effective at killing these two species of weeds. For many farmers round-up is not as effective as it used to be so farmers are putting many combinations of herbicides together to try and control waterhemp and giant ragweed. Some were successful and others not so much. There are a couple new technologies moving through the approval process that Tom has had in his research plots. It is going to be interesting to hear how effective they are.
