This List’s Minnesota Recipe For ‘Best Potluck Dish’ Is Just Wrong
There are some classic recipes and dishes out there that just scream 'Minnesota'-- but not the one this list says is our favorite.
Yah, sure, we're proud of our food up here in Minnesota, dont'cha know! Which is why I have a hard time believing what this new list of the 'Best Potluck Recipes From Every State' says the favorite potluck dish here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
Before we go any farther, if you had to guess which dish Minnesotans are most likely to bring to a potluck dinner-- whether it's at your church, your kid's sports team's dinner or a community event-- what would you guess it is?
Before I saw this list, I went with... our beloved tater tot hotdish. I mean, who doesn't love tater tot hotdish?!? And, what's more Minnesota than that? And, of course, there are a TON of tater tot hotdish recipes out there, so it covers a broad range of dishes, one of which is certain to be at most potluck dinners. (Although with all the food allergies and food-poisoning concerns today, just how many groups actually still have potluck dinners is also a valid conversation...)
Anyway, a co-worker guessed green bean casserole, which is also a solid guess-- even though it has that word 'casserole' in it, and, as we know, even though that's the recipe's actual name, it's actually still a hotdish, right?
But what did this Taste of Home Best Potluck Recipes From Every State say is Minnesota's favorite potluck dish? Try... Homemade peanut butter cups. Wait, what?
Yeah, homemade peanut butter cups. At least that's what LaVonne Hegland of St. Michael said on the Taste of Home site. "People can't believe how simple it is to make this irresistible candy with gooey, peanut butter centers," LaVonne is quoted as saying in the story.
Now, I'm sure LaVonne's homemade peanut butter cups are really good, and I'm sure I've probably had some at various potluck dinners I've been at over the years. But is that really the most Minnesota potluck dinner recipe they could find? What do you think?
