Generally in tough times, like a natural disaster, people can go one of two ways. We either see the good of people, through helping neighbors or we tend to see the worst like looting. This Faribault couple just got back from helping those affected by Hurricane Michael.

Dave and Shari Augustin just got back home here in Faribault after spending two weeks as part of a nationwide team deployed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Augustin's aren't strangers to being in communities ravaged by hurricanes as they have been in the aftermath of Hurricane's Sandy, Katrina and more recently Maria in Puerto Rico.

According to a story from Fox 9 news, Dave and Shari have nearly lost count of the number of hurricanes they’ve responded to since 2003 when they joined the National Disaster Medical Team.

The Augustin's got their latest call two weeks ago and it was once again time to put their skills to work in the aftermath of Michael.  Dave is a semi-retired paramedic and Shari in administration with the American College of Emergency Physicians.

It's no vacation either as the couple generally sleeps in tents, and work in pop-up hospitals all the while performing 12-14 hour shifts. The Augustins are apart of The teams help support communities with medical care, veterinary care, and mortuary assistance when a disaster or public health emergency overwhelms a community.

So far about 400 medical and public health personnel have treated more than 2,600 patients.
