A classic country hit from Ronnie Milsap played a pivotal role in Monday night's (Oct. 17) episode of The Voice, as two members of Blake Shelton's team battled it out to see which would remain and which one would go home.

Shelton chose both Blaine Long and Josh Gallagher for Team Blake this year, but according to the rules of the reality singing competition, when two singers face off during the Battle Round, their coach has to decide which one is the winner, and the other one gets sent home. Long and Gallagher squared off onstage, singing it out on "Stranger in My House," which Milsap took to No. 5 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart in 1983.

The original recording was very progressive for radio at the time, featuring a climactic electric rock guitar solo, and the two singers ratcheted up the energy on the song even higher, turning in an explosive dual performance that showcased both of their voices and stagecraft superbly.

Despite two standout performances, Shelton faced the difficult task of choosing just one singer as the winner. The other judges jumped in with their opinions, with Alicia Keys advocating to see Long remain in the competition, while Adam Levine and Miley Cyrus felt Gallagher was the winner.

Shelton agonized over the decision, saying, "This one breaks my heart." But ultimately he chose Gallagher, and while the other judges have the option to save a singer who loses a battle and bring him onto their teams, none of them exercised that option this time around, leaving Long to exit the competition.
